Renting a Harly in Maui

What a trip. My wife and I took a little vacation to Maui in early March. We'd been to Oahu before but this was the first time in Maui. All I can say is: If you haven't been there, you gotta go. It is one of the most spectacularly beautiful places I've been.

We had pretty much made up our minds to rent a Harley for a day while we were there and had checked online with the Harley Davidson dealer for rates. There weren't out of line. If I remember, it was about $179 for a full day. I've never rented one before so I can't say if those rates are similar to the mainland but it seemed fair.

Well, we actually wound up renting a Road King from a small independent guy. We actually told him (truthfully) that we were only going to use it for 5 hours as some plans had changed so we wound up paying his rate of $99. Well, after 3 hours cruising the island we rode by his little shop and said we wanted it for the whole day after all. When we brought it back at 4:30, almost 7 hours after we picked it up, I asked him how much more I owed and he said, "Don't worry about it". That was what we encountered everywhere we went while there, a laid back, very easy going attitude.

At any rate, we cruised a good portion of that island all day and had the time of our lives. That bike was beat to hell but we managed to work with the lumpa-da-dump of the (probably) never tuned engine and the warped front disk brake and had a great time.

If you ever get a chance, really no matter where you are visiting, it's great to rent a bike. You definitely go places where you wouldn't go if you were stuck in a car. We wound up climbing a little road that was barely big enough for one car up to a little village named Old Kahakuloa up in the rainforest. There was an old mission built in the mid 1800's up there and made for a fantastic day of riding!
